Shattering grackles
flash like obsidian
until darkness swallows fecund graves.
Drums keen between strips of wailing roots
surrounding translucent grubs
that emerge as Japanese beetles
and eat every damn grape leaf in town.
Not to mention roses.
It’s a sign, I tell you.
Times are tight.

This is great! My favorite is this part: “as Japanese beetles
and eat every damn grape leaf in town.” and of course the picture at the end! XD

I hate gardening…..but I love this….you have such a brilliant instinct for using words to create a profound impact.

Thank you, C.C. I appreciate your kind words at this time when April is winding down. It’s been a fun month writing and reading with you!

I both loved and hated gardening, for some of the very same reasons,

Damn those beetles and shattering grackles – much can be learnt about the world by looking at the state of a garden – not nonsense at all!

Wonderful wordling. Obnoxious insects.

Gardening is not always a pleasure but a constant war against an insidious enemy.
