Blink

Your ghost lingers
in the eyes of buildings
afraid to blink,
afraid I’ll disappear.
Salty trails trace my cheeks
like tracks of rain on windows,
tickling me awake,
taking me back
to your breath on my spirit
lacing words through life’s
lost condensation.

Looking up,
I close my eyes and open them
diminishing the possibility of you.

  1. Brenda there is something so haunting in your words. People and things disappear from our lives in a blink and we don’t always miss them until long afterward when something jogs memory or we hear a phrase or lyric from a song. And just as quickly we forget again. There is something here that pulls at something deep within me.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Elizabeth. This piece speaks to me, too. I keep coming back to it today. It started with more of the words from your prompt, but gradually they were whittled away until “ghost” was all that remained.

    • Thank you, Marianne. This is year 5 for me. It seemed like a milestone, so I had to go for it. I did skip two days (during spring break, even!), but wrote two pieces yesterday to make up for one of them. Glad you are reading my words. Again, thank you.
